Sew a Sweetgrass Basket at The North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum

Snowbird friends,
One of the first things that people see when they go to Charleston, SC are Gullah-Geechee sweetgrass basketmakers. These artists create beautiful intricate baskets which they sell in road side booths and The Market in downtown Charleston. I was really excited to hear that The North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum will be hosting Vera Manigault who will be teaching her basket making skills on March 15th! It will be a great experience to learn a unique skill and learn about the Gullah-Geechee history!
North Myrtle Beach, SC: Vera Manigault of Mt. Pleasant, SC, will teach the traditional art of Sweetgrass Basketmaking at North Myrtle Beach Museum on March 15, from 11AM until 3.30PM. At the young age of 4½, Vera learned the traditional African craft from her great-grand-aunt Honey. An eighth-generation weaver, Vera has made Sweetgrass baskets for more than 50 years. Vera made the baskets used in the movie The Patriot, starring Mel Gibson, and she has been featured in Southern Living, Food & Wine, National Geographic, and Travel+Leisure magazines, as well as in numerous interviews and educational programs.
Vera provides all materials needed to make a basket. While teaching the class, she will share Gullah-Geechee traditions and tales. "I learned about the Gullah culture, I was entertained—AND I made a basket," exclaimed Debbie Whitaker who attended a previous class taught by Vera.
Class size is limited. $65 per person. Museum members receive a $10 discount. Tickets available at the Museum. For more details or to purchase your ticket by credit card, call 843.427.7668 or email director@NMBmuseum.com.
I want to thank the museum's director, Jenean Todd for sharing this upcoming event with us!

North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum Hosts a Food-Finding Jaunt!

Snowbird friends,
If one wanted to they could eat out every night of the week for the entire year and never have to visit the same restaurant twice on The Grand Strand! As many of you are here for at least 3 months, I thought that you would really enjoy this upcoming North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum food finding jaunt!
North Myrtle Beach, SC: On Saturday, February 22, join Aïda Rogers and Tim Driggers for a tasty discussion of South Carolina specialties. The presentation begins at 7pm.
"There's no need to go hungry in South Carolina." In a state rich in produce, seafood, and "land food," residents can grow, catch, and hunt their own supper. But if you'd rather hop in your car and do some sightseeing, you can easily find a wonderful restaurant that can make the dining experience a lot easier.
Buckle your strap and hold onto your cap as Aïda Rogers, former editor of Sandlapper Magazine and creator of its popular "Stop Where the Parking Lot's Full" column, and Tim Driggers, the humor writer/lawyer who took over the column when she just couldn’t eat professionally anymore, take you on a food-finding jaunt across the Palmetto State. There's a lot of exploring to do, and plenty of good-eating places to plunder.
Reserve tickets for Ain't We Got Food. $5 per person includes a tasting menu of SC favorites. Tickets available at the Museum. This program is sponsored by The Humanities CouncilSC, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities; inspiring, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature, history, culture and heritage.
For more details or to purchase your ticket by credit card, call 843.427.7668 or email director@NMBmuseum.com.
I want to thank Director Jenean Todd for sharing her press release with us!

North Myrtle Beach Museum Happenings

Snowbird friends,
Over the next few months I am going to be sharing with you the upcoming events and exhibits at The North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum. The first exhibit, Peace on Earth, is going on right now and runs thru February 1st.
"In 2005, Dick Hester envisioned a Museum for the community. He wanted to capture the history of the North Myrtle Beach AREA. The AREA includes Atlantic Beach, Barefoot Resort, Brooksville, Cherry Grove, Crescent Beach, Little River, Longs, Ocean Drive, Wampee, and Windy Hill—and all the crossroads in between. After eight years of planning, renovating the facility donated by the City of North Myrtle Beach, and collecting historic artifacts and photographs from residents and from visitors, the Museum opened on April 7, 2013.
The Museum's seasonal exhibit PEACE ON EARTH continues through Saturday, February 1st. The display showcases posters created by North Myrtle Beach Middle School students for the Lions Club's annual Peace Poster contest. The students illustrated their visions for the theme "Our World, Our Future." Teacher Jennifer Cook, a former Peace Poster regional winner, encourages her students to participate in the contest. Coupled with the posters are historic Christmas cards and oyster-shell ornaments from the LaVinia and Owen Smith collection. The Smiths raised their family in the Crescent Beach section of North Myrtle Beach. LaVinia saved the cards through the years. Her granddaughter Dawn Smith gathered the items for the Museum. "It's interesting to see how Christmas card designs have changed through the years," said Dawn.
PEACE ON EARTH also includes Chanukah cards and several dolls from Ellie Schiller's vast collection. The Myrtle Beach resident has more than 1500 dolls. This year the eight-day festival of Chanukah began on Thanksgiving and ended on Thursday, December 5."
The Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10AM to 4PM. Admission fees: adult $5; senior (age 60+) $4; youth (ages 5 to 17) $3
For more information, call the Museum at 843.427.7668 or email director@NMBmuseum.com.
Thank you to The North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum's director, Jenean Todd, who shared her press release with us!
